DSL Internet

DSL Digital Subscriber Line is a type of broadband technology that sends digital data at high speeds along already-existing copper telephone lines, while allowing for the transmission of analog (voice) data at the same time. With DSL you can use your computer to access the internet and use your landline phone at the same time - unlike dial-up.

Advantages of DSL:

  • You can leave your Internet connection open and still use the phone line for voice calls

  • The speed is much higher than a regular modem

  • DSL doesn't necessarily require new wiring; it can use the phone line you already have.

  • The cost for DSL is usually comparable to the price for Dial-Up internet

Disadvantages of DSL:

  • A DSL connection is sensitive to distance and works better when you are closer to the provider's central office.

  • The service is not available everywhere.

Some of the most common variations on DSL include ADSL, HDSL, SDSL, and VDSL, all of which are considerably faster than an ordinary dialup internet connection.
