Voice over Internet Protocol is a technology that converts voice information
into digital data packets, and ransmits them wirelessly over a mobile
network. If you have a high speed internet connection then choosing a
VoIP phone service is an option to consider.
Portability - For the traveler, as long as you have access to a broadband
connection you can keep in touch with family, friends, and business
associates. Just pack an ip phone (broadband phone) and sign on to
your VoIP service and make your call. No worrying about cell phone
coverage, roaming fees, or long distance charges.
Disadvantages of VoIP:
VoIP is dependant on wall power. Landline phones operate on power
that is provided over the telephone line from the central office.
When power goes out, your landline phone (unless it is a cordless)
will still work. With VoIP however, no power means no phone.
Another consideration is that other systems in your home may be integrated
into the phone line. Digital subscription TV and some home security
systems use standard phone lines. There's currently no way to integrate
these products with VoIP.
Emergency 911 calls also become a challenge with VoIP. VoIP uses
IP-addressed phone numbers and there's no way to associate a geographic
location with an IP address. If a caller can't tell the 911 operator
where they are located, there's no way to identify where the police
or EMS should respond.
