WiFi Internet

WiFi - (Wireless Fidelity) is a technology created through an array of hundreds and even thousands of local "hotspots" or transmission stations throughout metropolitan areas and is increasingly becoming a viable option for customers in rural areas.

A wifi network uses radio waves, just like cell phones, televisions and radios do. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it.

Most new laptops and some desktop computers come with built-in wireless transmitters. If your computer doesn't have a built-in wifi transmitter, you can buy a wireless adapter that plugs into the PC card slot or USB port on a laptop. Desktop computers can use USB wifi adapters, or, you can buy an adapter that plugs into the PCI expansion slot inside the computer's case.

Companies such as JiWire offer a great nationwide WiFi finder and hotspot directory.

Advantages of WiFi:

  • No wires to mess with

  • Home networking allows multiple computers to access the wifi network

  • Some wifi networks provide high-speed Internet access for free, or for substantially less than the price of other broadband services

Disadvantages of WiFi:

  • Signal range is limited and the performance of wifi is distance sensitive

  • Not readily available in rural areas

  • Security issues should be addressed when using open wifi networks

Disadvantages of Aircards

  • Much like cell phones, most carriers are asking for a two year committment with a new aircard and data plan

  • Availability is limited to cell phone network coverage
